Hazard

Gamma Rays (Perseus) Hazard walk-through, completed in 2:10.9

Hazard is an exercise in using attacks to get your opponents to move toward each other and away from you. These attacks can be on unoccupied planets to get an opponent to give up on capturing the planet. Or, they can be on one of your opponents to get them to send reinforcements to the attacked planet.

Walk-through

  1. From 0:00 to 0:20, double your initial planet, then send some units to two different locations. Send those units towards both planets between you and orange and at the same times send new units to the double planet just ahead of you. When orange gives up capturing one of the planets between you and orange, redirect all of your units to capture the double planet head of your initial planet.
  2. From 0:21 to 0:30, capture the double planet between you and orange. Your front planet is the one that is most likely to be attacked by orange and purple. That is why you don’t want to keep sending units from it. You want it to be strong enough that it won’t be attacked later.
  3. From 0:31 to 0:47, send a mass of units to the left of the screen. This mass of units will be used to move units around on your opponents. Do not send any units from your front planet.
  4. From 0:48 to 0:50, use your mass of units to attack the front double on one of your opponents. Don’t let your units get too close to the opponent you attack. When your opponent reacts by sending reinforcements from their back planet, or the units get too close, send you units back to the left of the screen.
  5. From 0:51 to 1:03, you want your opponents to send as many units as possible to their forward planet. At the end of this phase you’re going to be sending a mass of units to a capture the double planet between you and orange. And, another mass of units to capture the double planet you and purple. That is why at 0:56 I send some units from the single planet to the back double.
  6. From 1:04 to 1:09, as the gamma ray burst begins send units from your back double to the double between you and purple. Then send your mass of units to capture the double between you and orange. You need to time this right so you capture the planet after the gamma ray burst. The reason you are sending the units prior to the burst is to encourage purple and orange to send their units in the direction of green, instead of your direction
  7. From 1:10 to 1:21, if they are still open, capture the single planets between you and orange and you and purple. Then promote your two newly captured double planets. Then send some units to the newly captured single planets to try to make it less likely your opponents attack those planets.

There are too many possible combinations here. My approach is to try and time my attacks on orange and purple for when they are just sending units elsewhere. Then I usually capture but don’t promote the just destroyed planet.

The goal is to destroy all opponent planets that are not going to be destroyed by the gamma ray burst, then to injure the opponent planets that will be killed by the gamma ray burst just enough that they will not be able to recapture their planets.
